Verse 109of 165

وَأَقْسَمُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ جَهْدَ أَيْمَٰنِهِمْ لَئِن جَآءَتْهُمْ ءَايَةٌۭ لَّيُؤْمِنُنَّ بِهَا ۚ قُلْ إِنَّمَا ٱلْءَايَٰتُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ۖ وَمَا يُشْعِرُكُمْ أَنَّهَآ إِذَا جَآءَتْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ﴿١٠٩

Translation (Sahih International)

And they swear by Allah their strongest oaths that if a sign came to them, they would surely believe in it. Say, "The signs are only with Allah." And what will make you perceive that even if a sign came, they would not believe.

Word-by-word meaning

وَأَقْسَمُوا۟wa-aqsamūAnd they swear
بِٱللَّهِbil-lahiby Allah
جَهْدَjahdastrongest
أَيْمَـٰنِهِمْaymānihim(of) their oaths
لَئِنla-inthat if
جَآءَتْهُمْjāathumcame to them
ءَايَةٌۭāyatuna sign
لَّيُؤْمِنُنَّlayu'minunnathey would surely believe
بِهَا ۚbihāin it
قُلْqulSay
إِنَّمَاinnamāOnly
ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتُl-āyātuthe signs
عِندَʿinda(are) with
ٱللَّهِ ۖl-lahiAllah
وَمَاwamāAnd what
يُشْعِرُكُمْyush'ʿirukumwill make you perceive
أَنَّهَآannahāthat [it]
إِذَاidhāwhen
جَآءَتْjāatit comes
لَاnot
يُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūnathey will believe

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Asking for Miracles and Swearing to Believe if They ComeAllah states that the idolators swore their strongest oaths by Allah, لَئِن جَآءَتْهُمْ ءَايَةٌ(that if there came to them a sign...) a miracle or phenomenon, لَّيُؤْمِنُنَّ بِهَا(they would surely believe therein.) affirming its truth, قُلْ إِنَّمَا الاٌّيَـتُ عِندَ اللَّهِ(Say: "Signs are but with Allah.
