An-Naml (The Ant)

Verse 15of 93

وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا دَاوُۥدَ وَسُلَيْمَٰنَ عِلْمًۭا ۖ وَقَالَا ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِى فَضَّلَنَا عَلَىٰ كَثِيرٍۢ مِّنْ عِبَادِهِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ﴿١٥

Translation (Sahih International)

And We had certainly given to David and Solomon knowledge, and they said, "Praise [is due] to Allah, who has favored us over many of His believing servants."

Word-by-word meaning

وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd verily
ءَاتَيْنَاātaynāWe gave
دَاوُۥدَdāwūdaDawood
وَسُلَيْمَـٰنَwasulaymānaand Sulaiman
عِلْمًۭا ۖʿil'manknowledge
وَقَالَاwaqālāand they said
ٱلْحَمْدُl-ḥamduPraise be
لِلَّهِlillahito Allah
ٱلَّذِىalladhīthe One Who
فَضَّلَنَاfaḍḍalanāhas favored us
عَلَىٰʿalāover
كَثِيرٍۢkathīrinmany
مِّنْminof
عِبَادِهِʿibādihiHis servants
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīnathe believers

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Dawud and Sulayman (peace be upon them), the organization of Sulayman's Troops and His passage through the Valley of the AntsHere Allah tells us about the great blessings and favors which He bestowed upon two of His servants and Prophets, Dawud (David) and his son Sulayman (Solomon), peace be upon them both, and how they enjoyed happiness in this world and the Hereafter, power and authority in this world, and the position of being Prophets and Messengers.
