Verse 173of 176

فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ فَيُوَفِّيهِمْ أُجُورَهُمْ وَيَزِيدُهُم مِّن فَضْلِهِۦ ۖ وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ٱسْتَنكَفُوا۟ وَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ فَيُعَذِّبُهُمْ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًۭا وَلَا يَجِدُونَ لَهُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَلِيًّۭا وَلَا نَصِيرًۭا﴿١٧٣

Translation (Sahih International)

And as for those who believed and did righteous deeds, He will give them in full their rewards and grant them extra from His bounty. But as for those who disdained and were arrogant, He will punish them with a painful punishment, and they will not find for themselves besides Allah any protector or helper.

Word-by-word meaning

فَأَمَّاfa-ammāThen as for
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieved
وَعَمِلُوا۟waʿamilūand did
ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِl-ṣāliḥātithe righteous deeds
فَيُوَفِّيهِمْfayuwaffīhimthen He will give them in full
أُجُورَهُمْujūrahumtheir reward
وَيَزِيدُهُمwayazīduhumand give them more
مِّنminfrom
فَضْلِهِۦ ۖfaḍlihiHis Bounty
وَأَمَّاwa-ammāAnd as for
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
ٱسْتَنكَفُوا۟is'tankafūdisdained
وَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟wa-is'takbarūand were arrogant
فَيُعَذِّبُهُمْfayuʿadhibuhumthen He will punish them
عَذَابًاʿadhāban(with) a punishment
أَلِيمًۭاalīmanpainful
وَلَاwalāand not
يَجِدُونَyajidūnawill they find
لَهُمlahumfor themselves
مِّنminfrom
دُونِdūnibesides
ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
وَلِيًّۭاwaliyyanany protector
وَلَاwalāand not
نَصِيرًۭاnaṣīranany helper

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

The Prophets and Angels Are Never too Proud to Worship AllahIbn Abi Hatim recorded that Ibn `Abbas said that, `proud', means insolent. Qatadah said that,الْمَسِيحُ أَن يَكُونَ عَبْداً للَّهِ وَلاَ الْمَلَـئِكَةُ الْمُقَرَّبُونَ(Al-Masih will never be too proud to be a servant of Allah nor the angels who are near (to Allah).
