At-Tawbah (The Repentance)

Verse 73of 129

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ جَٰهِدِ ٱلْكُفَّارَ وَٱلْمُنَٰفِقِينَ وَٱغْلُظْ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ وَمَأْوَىٰهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ ۖ وَبِئْسَ ٱلْمَصِيرُ﴿٧٣

Translation (Sahih International)

O Prophet, fight against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh upon them. And their refuge is Hell, and wretched is the destination.

Word-by-word meaning

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO Prophet
ٱلنَّبِىُّl-nabiyuO Prophet
جَـٰهِدِjāhidiStrive (against)
ٱلْكُفَّارَl-kufārathe disbelievers
وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَwal-munāfiqīnaand the hypocrites
وَٱغْلُظْwa-ugh'luẓand be stern
عَلَيْهِمْ ۚʿalayhimwith them
وَمَأْوَىٰهُمْwamawāhumAnd their abode
جَهَنَّمُ ۖjahannamu(is) Hell
وَبِئْسَwabi'saand wretched
ٱلْمَصِيرُl-maṣīru(is) the destination

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

The Order for Jihad against the Disbelievers and HypocritesAllah commanded His Messenger to strive hard against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and to be harsh against them. Allah also commanded him to be merciful with the believers who followed him, informing him that the destination of the disbelievers and hypocrites is the Fire in the Hereafter.
